Pharmacology

Sulfacetamide

Competitively antagonizes PABA, an essential component of folic acid synthesis.

Sulfur

Inhibits the growth of Propionibacterium acnes and the formation of free fatty acids.

Indications and Usage

Topical control of acne vulgaris, acne rosacea, and seborrheic dermatitis.

Contraindications

Kidney disease; known hypersensitivity to sulfonamides, sulfur, or any component of the product.

Dosage and Administration

Adults and Children 12 y and older Avar Cleanser , Avar LS Cleanser , BP 10-1 Wash , BP Cleansing Wash , Cerisa Wash , Claris Clarifying Wash , Clenia foaming wash, Plexion cleanser, Prascion Cleanser , Rosanil cleanser, Sumadan Wash , Sumaxin soap, Sumaxin TS soap, Zencia soap

Topical Wet skin and liberally apply to area(s) to be cleansed once or twice daily, massage gently into skin for 10 to 20 seconds working into a full lather, rinse thoroughly and pat dry. Rosula foam may also be left on the skin without washing off.

Topical Apply a thin layer to affected area(s) 1 to 3 times daily.

Clenia

Topical Apply thin layer to affected area(s) 1 to 3 times daily. To minimize potential dryness, start with 1 application daily, then gradually increase to 2 to 3 times daily as needed.

Plexion cleansing cloth, Prascion FC Cleansing Cloths , Sumaxin cleansing pads

Topical Wash affected area(s) with cleansing cloth or pad once or twice daily. Wet area(s) with water. Wet cloth or pad with a small amount of water and work into a full lather. Cleanse area(s) for 10 to 20 seconds. Rinse thoroughly and pat dry.

Plexion SCT , SE 10-5 SS Cream , Suphera

Topical Wet skin. Apply in a film to entire face, avoiding contact with eyes or mucous membranes. Wait 10 minutes or until dry. Rinse thoroughly with water and pat dry.

General Advice

  • For external use only.
  • If drying occurs with topical cleanser or wash, it may be controlled by rinsing product off sooner or using less often.
  • Shake foam vigorously before administering.
  • Avoid contact with eyes, eyelids, lips, and mucous membranes.

Storage/Stability

Store between 59° and 77°F. Do not freeze.

Adverse Reactions

Dermatologic

Dryness; erythema; local irritation; itching; reddening and scaling of the epidermis.

Miscellaneous

Allergic hypersensitivity.

Precautions

Monitor

Observe patients carefully for possible local irritation or sensitization during long-term therapy.


Pregnancy

Category C .

Lactation

Undetermined; however, small amounts of orally administered sulfonamides are secreted in breast milk.

Children

Safety and efficacy not determined in children younger than 12 y.

Hypersensitivity

Rare severe hypersensitivity reactions, including contact dermatitis, Steven-Johnson syndrome, acute hemolytic anemia, purpura, hemorrhagica, TEN, fulminant hepatic necrosis, drug fever, jaundice, agranulocytosis, aplastic anemia, and other blood dyscrasias may occur.

Irritation

If irritation develops, discontinue use and institute appropriate therapy.

Skin condition

Use caution on areas of denuded or abraded skin.

Sodium metabisulfite

May contain sodium metabisulfite, which can cause allergic-type reactions, including anaphylactic symptoms and life-threatening or less severe asthmatic episodes in susceptible individuals.

Patient Information

  • Review prescribed dosing schedule with patient or caregiver.
  • Remind patient or caregiver that product is not to be used in the eye, ear, or mucous membranes.
  • Teach patient or caregiver proper technique for applying product: wash hands; shake lotion, foam, and suspension well, then apply thin film to affected area(s) using fingers. Wash hands after applying product.
  • Advise patient or caregiver to contact health care provider if local redness or swelling develops or if skin lesions do not improve or they worsen.
